Happy birthday Gilbert Roland (December 11, 1905 - May 15, 1994), c. 1920s
Gilbert Roland enjoyed an exceptionally long career on the screen, beginning with numerous silents in the 1920s and ending in the 1980s with a film called Barbarosa (1982), co-starring Willie Nelson and Gary Busey (I know right?). Though he’s quoted as saying “I don’t have any delusions about myself as an actor. I’m grateful for being able to find enough work all these years,” his acting was praised in many of his roles, particularly in Vincente Minelli’s The Bad and the Beautiful (1952) and the 1964 western Cheyenne Autumn. He earned a Golden Globe nomination for his roles in both of these films.
Roland was also famous for his long-term affair with silent mega-star Norma Talmadge, over a decade his senior, when she was married to movie mogul Joe Schenck. Though Talmadge and Schenck eventually divorced, Roland and Talmadge did not end up marrying, as Talmadge worried about their age difference. Instead Roland married actress Constance Bennett, with whom he had two children - their marriage lasted for five years. His second marriage, to Guillermina Cantú, lasted for forty years until his death in 1994.
